The Essence of Haiti

Yesterday was an interesting day! The girls went up the mountain to the women's prison to pass out bread to the inmates. Let's just say it's nothing like American prison. There were about 15 to 20 inmates in every cell, and they could have any personal item they wanted. It was an eye opening experience for all of us.

After that we took the bumpy ride down the mountain to the tin market where we bartered for beautiful Haitian art (including a Bradford Tree for the office).

Today we went to the very top of the mountain to an overlook that allowed us to see all of the greater Port Au Prince area. It really put the size of the country in perspective. It is about the size of Maryland, but it has almost 3X as many people. Every ride we go on takes forever because of traffic! There are 4,000 km of roads in Haiti, but only 1,000 km are paved.

This afternoon we are heading to Sport Disciple to play soccer with local children.

We are so thankful for the opportunity and cannot believe we are coming home tomorrow with full hearts and eyes opened!
